Thank you to everyone who attended the wonderfull fundraiser with Junaid Jamshed in aid of the East Africa famine appeal.
Everyone enjoyed Brother Junaid's company and were enthralled with his little anecdotes from his life story and off course his beautiful voice. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to hear more of his nasheeds but otherwise it went well and managed to raise nearly £8,500! Well done everyone.

Special Guest Junaid Jamshed:
Junaid Jamshed was one of Pakistan’s most popular musical artists when he ended his career as a pop star in 2003 to lead what he considers an authentic spiritual life.

The 41 year old claims that he is far happier today than he ever was at the height of his stardom and says he does not miss the glamour, adoration and the money. Devoted to his faith, the former pop star feels that he has a responsibility to guide people on to the right path and regularly does Islamic talks, including in the UK. After channelling his efforts into charity work, Jamshed now prefers to concentrate on dawah (inviting others to Islam). I was involved in raising money for a hospital, which is now complete. I don’t think I will be doing much charity work as it was not an easy thing to do; it is a big responsibility ensuring that the money is spent in the right places, said Jamshed. Brother Junaid
will be joining us on the night and will be entertaining us with his beautiful Nasheeds.
Horn of Africa Drought Crisis:As you are no doubt aware the Horn of Africa has been affected by the worst droughts in 60 years. More than 13 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of this huge crisis. Many people in these areas will still need ongoing emergency support in the short term. Good rains and longer term aid will be needed in the coming years to enable them to rebuild their livelihoods. The current rains also bring their own problems, including speeding the spread of cholera which is already a major concern, particularly in Somalia.
What is needed now?A massive multi-sectoral response is critical to prevent additional deaths and total livelihood/social collapse. Most immediately, interventions to improve food access and to address health/nutrition issues are needed. In the medium term, interventions to rebuild and support livelihoods are critical. Extraordinary measures to provide these responses should be implemented. These assistance needs will persist through at least December 2011.
For Further Information on the Horn of Africa Drought Crisis, please take the time to read through this report prepared by our partners, Muslim Charity.
